Joy & Kindness Panel at World UNITY Week

Dear Joyfuellers,

Less than two weeks ago I had an extraordinary opportunity to be a part of World UNITY Week, a week-long global collaborative celebrating the contributions and ideas of thinkers and seekers around the world… events and offerings committed to deep listening and learning  to collaborate on healing solutions our earth and humanity deserves and needs.

Joyfuel partnered with so many inspiring organizations. I was behind the scenes of many presentations and even produced  several Joyfuel programs including a wonderful panel discussion about JOY and Kindness with Greg Acuna, Joy Resor and Louisa Garrett.

I hope you will find time to listen and experience their deep and meaningful thoughts and ideas about the possibilities of kindness and joy even as we navigate our world in the throes of a global pandemic.

Huge THANKS to our panelists for their contributions and for their willingness to jump in to share this conversation.

wisdom of elders Pearl Schechter

dear ones,
tonight i looked at this photo on my web site and thought, dear Pearl, my elder, friend and teacher. the first guest on the Joyfuel Kindcast, and the eldest friend I have. how are you? i sent my thoughts to her, and then went back to my work.
it’s been 18 months since we spoke.

then, 2 minutes later, my phone rang. 9:21 pm this evening. i answered…

“Hello, this is Pearl Schechter. May I speak to Becky?”

I could hardly answer her, for the joy that bubbled up inside!
Pearl is calling me. She had been thinking of me and hoped it wasn’t too late to call.
I literally could barely speak for the first few minutes of our 15 minute call–in shock of her call. It was a gift alike the synchronicity of how we met all those years ago.
Pearl’s connection to me, her response to my mental call to her, and the wisdom of the elders dictates I share Pearl’s interview with you right now. Pearl offers medicine for all of us right now, for our joy and our mental sanity.
Our audio interview appears below. Pearl was on the Joyfuel Kindcast, sharing a beautiful deep conversation that became our very first episode in 2014. We talked about kindness, joy and her husband’s wisdom “Never worry in advance.”
Please listen and let me know how she makes you feel. Let me know any questions or messages you might have for Pearl.
And please hold Pearl in your thoughts and pray with me for Pearl’s safety. Let’s take seriously the warnings and advice to stay home and flatten the curve of Covid-19.  Pearl told me tonight she hopes to turn 101 in a few months.  We need to protect and care for our world’s most vulnerable, like Pearl. Please stay home for Pearl and all the older people (and those at risk) whom we love. By staying home you will never know how many people you might save, but we WILL save lives for certain, by staying home together.

six-word story play

Hello dear Joyfueller,
Want to play for joy? I had a lovely conversation with customer service person at my cell phone company today. Somehow we found ourselves talking about writing. He told me he used to write. I told him I went through a very long period where I didn’t write at all, a drought that was a difficult time for me.

My new friend helped my original problem, then at the end of our call I said to him, “Hey, not sure if you want to write again, but if you do perhaps this might be a fun thing for you to try…” then I went on to tell him about Ernest Hemingway’s love of six-word stories. Hemingway is renowned for many things including inventing these pithy little word packets.

(Although I love Ernie, I’m thinking early humans probably invented them, round the fire one night… if we were truly earnest about it  😉 )
Anyway I shared one I wrote with my new friend–a deeply personal six-word story that took me 7 years to live. Six-word stories invite a great opportunity to write and capture an essence of something meaningful to you, and maybe to others too.

Why not have a go this weekend? What 6-word story do you have to tell? Perhaps write about something to do with life, your history/herstory? or your week, or today? or your imaginary rhinoceros? Want to play? If so, share your story in comments, maybe share where you are in our world too?!  You can post on social media with a new hashtag just for our community #mediaforjoyfuel. I’d love to feature your story(ies) in a future post!

(Oh…. about my new phone company friend? He was curious and he said he was going to try it. He missed writing.)

Have a Joyfuelled weekend dear love. I look forward to reading your stories. xoxo
