2020 is certainly providing a year to potentially reconsider and re-imagine our individual lives while contemplating our interconnectedness and dependencies upon one another.
Since 2014 Joyfuel has run numerous experiments about what it might mean to be a mixed-media agency dedicated to kindness, creativity and joy: In-person and online ePlayshops, social media Mindful Moments, and Joyfuel Kindcasts–each Joyfuel project has intended participant exploration of how we might open to play and generate ideas towards activating greater joy in humans.
As founder and lead joy activist at Joyfuel, I view 2020 as the year we discover together how to collaborate on Joyfuel shifting from “me to we”, by community sourcing new and inspiring content for our readers and subscribers. Perhaps our leading question this year: How do we collaborate and support an emerging community of storytellers committed to telling personal stories of the kindness, creativity and joy that binds us together?
Towards this exploration Joyfuel has been chosen by The Pollination Project to receive a 2020 Impact Grant providing funding towards our basic annual expenses. This funding will allow further investigation and engagement with you and other Joyfuellers around the world, and I am deeply grateful.
I am also deeply concerned by the tidal wave impact of coronavirus creating lockdown and health care crisises, and food shortages all over the world. My heart is fully broken open to find ways to use ideas and funding to inspire and support people in sharing their stories of kindness, and how to find joy amidst sadness and loss.
Holding all of these facts and concerns, Joyfuel is rolling out a new initiative… a new branch is growing on the Joyfuel Tree called JOY CORPS.
Joy Corps aspires to train and support world-wide storytellers for kindness through storytelling workshops and brainstorming sessions supporting people through the ideation process of potentially solving their problems through the power of visual kindness storytelling.
Joy Corps is still very much unfolding and in the works. I hope to offer our first training in early May, and have new storytellers’ kindness stories featured on our media channels very soon.
Your ideas and thoughts are welcome. Please comment or hit reply to let me know what you are thinking. We will do this together. Now more than ever we need an agency to speak of the things that unify us in humanity, qualities of kindness, creativity and joy to support us through these challenging times. I am dedicated to you and this work and to finding a way together.
In gratitude for JOY,
Joyfuel Founder and Chief Joy Activist

In determining our projects I was very cognizant to use as few materials as possible, to UPCYCLEor MAKE something from something else, and to provide multiple options so hopefully you won’t need to purchase very many things. (If you live in the Raleigh/Wake Forest, North Carolina area and want to borrow some of my things, you are welcome to my stuff… my studio is YOUR studio!)

Today marks the Summer Solstice for half of us on Earth (and Winter Solstice for the other half). I wanted to make a special video to honor you. Want to play for joy? I had a lovely conversation with customer service person at my cell phone company today. Somehow we found ourselves talking about writing. He told me he used to write. I told him I went through a very long period where I didn’t write at all, a drought that was a difficult time for me.
My new friend helped my original problem, then at the end of our call I said to him, “Hey, not sure if you want to write again, but if you do perhaps this might be a fun thing for you to try…” then I went on to tell him about Ernest Hemingway’s love of six-word stories. Hemingway is renowned for many things including inventing these pithy little word packets.
(Although I love Ernie, I’m thinking early humans probably invented them, round the fire one night… if we were truly earnest about it 😉 )
Anyway I shared one I wrote with my new friend–a deeply personal six-word story that took me 7 years to live. Six-word stories invite a great opportunity to write and capture an essence of something meaningful to you, and maybe to others too.
Why not have a go this weekend? What 6-word story do you have to tell? Perhaps write about something to do with life, your history/herstory? or your week, or today? or your imaginary rhinoceros? Want to play? If so, share your story in comments, maybe share where you are in our world too?! You can post on social media with a new hashtag just for our community #mediaforjoyfuel. I’d love to feature your story(ies) in a future post!
(Oh…. about my new phone company friend? He was curious and he said he was going to try it. He missed writing.)
Have a Joyfuelled weekend dear love. I look forward to reading your stories. xoxo
When the Joyfuel ecourse came out in 2014 I acted on impulse and instinct and pieced together an interview series featuring people who are committed to living their lives infused by the essences of joy, kindness and creativity. The series the JOYFUEL KINDCAST operated on the currency of LOVE necessitating.experimentation with different FREE recording platforms and modalities. The result was the first season of the Joyfuel Kindcast. I am deeply grateful to everyone who committed their time, thoughts and lives to share with me and listeners in our little video series.
I learned so much in the process; about creativity, music, kindness, art, and also about the act of making something as meaningful as possible with very limited resources… learning about good enough for LOVE and GIFT. Together we made and shared something very special.
Season TWO of the Joyfuel Kindcast is now gestating. For our new season I pass the producer’s role to you! WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO HEAR ON THE NEXT SEASON OF JOYFUEL KINDCAST? We want to feature your neighbors, teachers, friends—perhaps even YOU–on the program. We are looking for YOUTH and adults from all over our world. Please take a moment to think and fill out this form to submit your nomination for the Joyfuel Kindcast. (Be sure to hit “Submit” at the bottom of the page.)
Last year so many people cheered me on and backed my attendance at the Appalachian State Expressive Arts Therapy Institute, in North Carolina. Thank you so very much! Because of kindness and generosity –and my husband’s holding of the fort — I was given time and space to deepen my own heART practice, to study Joanna Macy’s work Active Hope–among the many other en spirited offerings of the Institute.
Infused by my heARTfull mountain experience I wrote and gave a talk about our super powers. In this 7 minute excerpt I talk about the power of “Our Gifts” . I share this with the prayer that we each remember and discover the powerful gifts we have to live and give!
Because of you, I am. becky suzik
Thank you to UU Peace Fellowship of Raleigh for the opportunity to share my heART in this talk. And I hold deep gratitude always to my many teachers including Joanna Macy and those attending and creating the Appalachian State Expressive Art Institute.
